As a Research Chemist working within Component Science you will define and undertake organic synthesis projects to meet business needs.


The role:


Working in our recently renovated state-of-the-art synthesis laboratories at Hazelwood, you will be undertaking synthesis and process development of novel additives and plant support of existing additives used in engine oils, gear oils and fuel additives. The chemistries you encounter will be wide and varied and will include surfactants, small molecules, functionalised oligomers and polymers.  Ingredients and products can be ill-defined and you will need to use your organic chemistry skills to devise efficient and ingenious syntheses and analysis with these materials. There are 500 MHz NMR, ESI and GC MS and GPC on site and within our lab continuous FTIR probes to measure progress of your reaction in-situ. Typical reaction sizes are large at 500ml – 1 litre, as our analysis and screen tests are involved and may require large quantities.


In comparison to other industries such as pharmaceuticals product life and development cycles in our industry are short and it is highly likely that you will see compounds you are working on in the lab being commercialised. You are expected to be involved in the process development and scale up of your inventions right to plant scale. There are brand new scale up facilities to 20kg in the lab, before moving to our extensive pilot plant in Wickliffe, Ohio, USA.


Excellent communication skills and teamwork are crucial to this role. You will be expected to communicate with your internal business customers/formulators on a regular basis via phone and videoconference (many may be based in our Wickliffe headquarters) and to liaise continuously with fellow Chemists within Hazelwood Component Science and our larger sister laboratory in Wickliffe, Ohio, USA. You will work closely with the Applied Sciences, Analytical and other service labs both on site and overseas to ensure your compounds are being screen tested, engine tested and analysed, and use these results to decide upon the next steps of your syntheses. You will keep your electronic laboratory notebook up to date, write technical reports and be requested to give regular presentations to both technical and commercial audiences.


Component Science is seen as being one of the most innovative in the Lubrizol Corporation and you will be expected to contribute strongly towards that. Once established, as well as devising syntheses for target molecules, you will be expected to create the target structures yourself.


Our department scores highly in terms of patents produced and you would be expected to contribute to this. In addition, we have established extensive links with UK universities and you will be expected to continue and, if possible, extend these further.


To be successful you will need:


  • BSc or equivalent in Chemistry
  • Strong organic synthesis skills, preferably to Ph.D. level
  • Previous experience of working within a laboratory environment with strong, practical laboratory skills
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Ability to work logically and interpret data to produce high quality reports
  • Presentation skills
  • Microsoft Office and preferably ChemDraw
