Essential Skills Required:

  • Performs various duties in laboratory

  • Analyze incoming raw materials, in-process batches, as well as packaged material using a variety of instrumental and testing methods

  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with other chemists and plant personnel.

  • Determine and calculate appropriate additions to batches

  • Approve products and raw materials for release

  • Handle multiple tests and products simultaneously

  • Perform proper microbiological plating techniques and reading determinations

  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory with special attention to safety

  • Participate in improvement projects as directed by manager

  • Perform preventive maintenance, calibration and verification on lab equipment and methods

  • Create, maintain and standardize reagents

  • Must be able to meet physical requirements including: ability to lift up to 40 lbs; working around hazardous chemicals; wearing all required personal protective equipment, and completing physically demanding work that requires lifting, kneeling and twisting

  • Must be physically capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment for all areas of the plant

  • Flexibility with schedule and work duties; must be willing to work overtime including weekends, holidays and call-ins

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment

  • Detail oriented and the ability to prioritize, organize, and follow through

  • Excellent oral, written, and telephone communication skills

  • Demonstrated skill in handling multiple tasks at once to accomplish the overall goal

  • Self-starter; takes initiative and good time management skills

  • Ability to see projects through completion as directed

  • Participate in monthly safety/staff meetings

  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED

  • At least 2 years experience in laboratory testing techniques (school or employment)

  • Knowledge and understanding of industrial lab safety policies and procedures

  • Flexibility to work any shift, including graveyards and weekends

  • Must be able to work alone and maintain all lab activities as needed

  • Strong proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook

Considered a Plus

  • Associates Degree in chemistry or other technical field

  • Previous work experience in a chemical lab in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience with lab instrumentation including: GC, HPLC, FT-IR, UV-vis, viscometers and titrations

  • General knowledge in SAP
