The Director of Technology is responsible for managing the entire technology department which consists of technical support, new product development, testing and R&D. This department supports the greases and fluids businesses at Chemtool. Additionally, setting innovation strategy, establishing an external image that demonstrates Chemtool’s technology leadership, coaching of personnel and management of technical budgets are key responsibilities.

The primary stakeholders are Chemtool customers, VPs of Strategic Marketing, Product Management and Sales for both business segments. The position relies on Sales, Product Managers, Program Managers, Strategic Marketing and Business Development for input in development and prioritization of technical programs. The position reports to the VP of Strategic Marketing.

Essential Job Functions

Strategic Responsibilities

  • Ensure the reliability of testing and quality of work as well as reporting of results

  • Develop patent and innovation strategy for Chemtool

  • Develop an understanding of OEM approvals and develop strategies to secure OEM approvals

  • Identify key testing capability gaps and develop capital requests and justification

  • Keep current with technological developments in the field including safety and global compliance trends as well as looming shortages and develop alternatives in advance

  • Internal reporting to management teams on strategic technical issues

  • Act as the lead liaison between Chemtool R&D and Lubrizol R&D

  • Develop overall strategies for the technical programs

  • Provide feedback on the technology aspects of any acquisitions being considered for the business

  • Participate in technical organizations and societies, such as NLGI and ELGI, to provide global recognition for Chemtool technology

Tactical Responsibilities

  • Institute a culture of safety and ensure all safety guidelines are followed

  • Lead Product Development and R&D ideas and work with the stakeholders to develop a product pipeline that covers improvements in existing products as well as new products

  • Manage priorities and workflow within the team to ensure timely completion of technical projects.

  • Develop efficient ways of reporting on technical programs

  • Timely development of new technologies

  • Develop timely solutions to complex problems from the field

  • Coach and help staff with prioritization of products and projects

  • Insure a reputation of quality R & D results delivered on a timely basis

  • Identify and evaluate synergies between Lubrizol companies and Chemtool.

  • Develop R & D capabilities – capital budget and staffing plans – and present them in a timely fashion to meet evolving needs of the organization

  • Grow R & D personnel via ensuring proper training and attendance at technical society meetings and develop external certifications such as certified NLGI chemists.

  • Engage in customer interactions so that new products are developed which generate increased sales.

  • Drive new product development and innovation through knowledge of the market and customer interactions, industry contacts, trade journals, patents, competitive products, etc.

  • Understanding of raw material chemistry and manufacturing processes

  • Develop specifications and qualify raw materials / suppliers and identify alternative to save on raw materials

  • Develop lab level processes for new greases for scale-up by pilot plant

  • Implement re-work strategies for non-working slow moving inventory and bad batches made in manufacturing and report on the time spent on these activities on a monthly basis

Education/Certification

  • Ph.D. degree in the science or engineering field or B.S. degree with direct and substantial experience in grease and fluids technology programs

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years industry experience in lubrication with strong knowledge of lubricant technology /chemistry

  • Strong track record in new product development and commercialization

  • Management training

  • Proven relationship building skills

  • Proficiency in computer skills (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)

  • Must possess solid work ethic (self-starter and highly motivated).
