Title: Chemist

Department: Wickliffe Blend Test Services Reports to : Testing Science Manager

The Chemist will be responsible for strategic leadership of testing processes to improve and sustain the competitive advantage provided by Blend Test Services (BTS) to Lubrizol Additives as manifested in demonstrating performance, delivering confidence, and achieving quality through conformance for the Testing Division.


Industry Advocacy

  • Advocacy for assigned test methods governed by industry organizations (ASTM, CEC, DIN, SAC, ISO, OEM, etc.)

  • Lead and influence at external industry meetings

  • Engage with global enterprise to proactively identify opportunities for industry advocacy

Business Engagement

  • Partner with business units on product development and differentiated testing programs

  • Support business unit product development project teams to facilitate testing technology transfer and specification alignment from BTS sites to manufacturing QA labs

  • Drive conformity of BTS testing procedures to OEM and industry standards in support of business units’ performance claims

Global Test Method Owner

  • Serve as Global Test Method Owner of assigned test methods within Testing Division

  • Lead project teams spanning BTS sites to align testing process capabilities throughout the enterprise with global Rules Documents

  • As a Global Test Method Owner, provide oversight and technical leadership of quality assurance procedures and specifications including control chart acceptance criteria, ASTM Proficiency Testing Programs (PTP), CEC, and TMC or equivalent referencing in BTS labs

  • Lead management of change projects required by updates to industry standard test methods (ASTM, CEC, DIN, ISO, OEM, etc.) to maintain compliance in BTS sites

  • Assess and improve change management processes for continuous improvement of test methods that may impact test results from BTS sites on product development programs

Technical Leadership

  • Interface effectively with other Testing Science staff, Operations, R&D, other Testing groups and LZA business units to support business objectives

  • Support testing technology transfer from R&D into BTS

  • Technical owner of assigned test methods within Wickliffe BTS

  • Troubleshoot test methods and instrumentation to ensure minimal downtime

  • Provide tactical support to testing labs as required by business unit product management

Quality System Champion

  • Lead test method validation / verification and instrument qualification programs for assigned testing technology areas

  • Collaborate with other chemists, test technicians, and Quality Manager on Quality Management System (QMS) documentation, including Work Instructions and Lab Procedures

  • Define training requirements for assigned test methods and support training deployment

  • Lead training efforts for BTS associates as necessary

  • Establish preventative maintenance and calibration requirements for assigned test methods

  • Lead investigation of testing nonconformances for assigned test methods and support lab technician troubleshooting

  • By modeling behavior, encourage test technicians to think about their tests as definable processes that require 100% compliance to methods, as specified in Work Instructions and Lab Procedures


  • Actively support safety initiatives such as RCMS (Responsible Care Management System) and OSHA VPP (Voluntary Protection Program) and ensure appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is used in labs.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree with at least 5+ years of experience in an industrial setting.

  • OR Ph.D. in analytical chemistry. Ph.D. in organic or inorganic chemistry also considered.

  • Project management experience.

  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build relationships with colleagues at multiple levels of an organization.

  • Knowledge of lubricants and/or lubricant additives.

  • Must be self-motivated with ability to handle, organize and prioritize multiple tasks and be able to perform under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Good computer skills to include SharePoint and Microsoft Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
