The Entrepreneur is responsible for the leading opportunities from Discovery through Incubation of New Business Development opportunities.
Activities include vetting ideas using Real, Win, Worth principle and practices, using Value Proposition and Business Model Design to build out opportunities and enhance our domains of exploration. The individual will develop robust business plans, defining technical and commercial metrics and milestones, setting budgets and resource needs for the portfolio of new business development projects, presenting business proposals to the next level for funding, acquisitions, etc. These are managed through the Agile Gate Process.
This position also plays a key role in establishing internal and external partnerships, contributing to the design of the innovation roadmap and structuring the development process for venture investment opportunities. The Entrepreneur also collaborates extensively with the Sr. NBD Advisor in scouting and exploring initiative enhancements for target opportunities. Lastly, the Entrepreneur maintains a supporting function across Acceleration as appropriate.
This position resides in the New Business Development Group and reports to the Director of New Business Development.
Able to find, research, assess, facilitate and lead new business development projects to transform expertise, technology and services into new sustainable value propositions and corresponding businesses.
Able to drive opportunities through the innovation process; discovery, and incubation ultimately handing off to commercial acceleration manager or business groups after the business models and value proposition are validated with growing sales demand established.
Able to layer enterprise capabilities; business and pricing models, partnerships and novel customer programs, to create sustainable commercial value.
Able to develop and nurture internal and external relationships to identify and propagate new business opportunities.
Support and collaborate with the Senior NBD director and Sr. Advisor to meet our new business development and innovation goals.
Be Innovative in problem solving and analytical methods building upon strong technical and business acumen skills.
Seeking the latest innovation and business development best practices and incorporating them into the LZ NBD process.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Discovery - Evaluate opportunities; monitoring mega trends, responsible for market research on targeted opportunities, assessing technology and intellectual property. Quickly terminating unviable opportunities then tapping into the idea pipeline for new opportunities to pursue.
Incubation – Defining milestones, technical targets, establishing budgets and resource needs, setting commercial targets for new business development projects, presenting proposals to the next level for selecting incubates, develop new business cases and plans. Forge partnerships with other organizations for providing services to the incubates or the incubator; marketing the incubator, sponsorships…etc.
Portfolio Management – Owner and Champion for defined portfolios or projects within the new business development taxonomy
Communication – Be the face of new business development. Plan various workshops and events to showcase Lubrizol’s NBD efforts and to introduce business development techniques to the greater organization.
Mentor Network: Develop internal resources to build a workforce of intrapreneurs that have business acumen and experience with new business development processes and skills.
Job Qualifications (Required):
A Bachelor’s Degree in a related technical field (such as chemistry, chemical or mechanical engineering) or Business Administration, Finance or Sales/Marketing. An advanced degree is strongly preferred.
5 years of experience building business cases, managing product lines and/or budgets. Work within a Start-up is a plus.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to draw conclusions from copious amounts of information.
Elevated level of strategic thinking and strategy development skills with ability to see the big picture as well as have a strong grasp on data and details.
Proven team player with the demonstrated ability to influence and involve others.
Highly target-driven, self-motivated and willing to take responsibility.
Excellent communicator able to articulate both complex positions as well as conceptual constructs
Job Qualifications (Preferred):
Advanced Degree in STEM and / or a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
Previous experience in a business incubator, a start-up advisory or any kind of entrepreneurial experience.
